Welcome to the World of Cities and Comparisons!
Have you ever wondered how to describe your hometown or compare it with a city far away? In this unit, we will learn how to talk about cities, countries, and nationalities, while mastering the art of comparisons.
1. Cities and Countries
When we talk about where we live or travel, we use specific vocabulary. Remember, a country is a large area like Turkey or Japan, while a city is a smaller place within that country, like Istanbul or Tokyo. To ask where someone is from, we use: “Where are you from?” and answer with “I am from Turkey.”
2. Making Comparisons
When we want to show the difference between two things, we use comparative adjectives. The rule depends on the length of the word:
- Short Adjectives: If the word has one syllable, we add -er at the end. For example: fast -> faster, big -> bigger, small -> smaller.
- Long Adjectives: If the word has two or more syllables, we use “more” before the adjective. For example: beautiful -> more beautiful, crowded -> more crowded.
Golden Rule: Always use the word “than” after the comparative adjective to connect the two things you are comparing. For example: “Istanbul is more crowded than Ankara.” or “London is colder than Antalya.”
3. Important Tips
Watch out for spelling changes! When a short adjective ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant (like big), we double the last letter: big -> bigger, hot -> hotter. Also, some adjectives are irregular. They do not follow the rules! The most important one is good, which becomes better, and bad, which becomes worse. You cannot say “gooder”!
Practice Suggestion: Look at two cities you know. Make a list of their features—is one cleaner? Is one more modern? Write three sentences using these comparisons. This will help you remember the rules easily. Remember, learning a language is like visiting a new city; the more you explore, the better you become!
